PaceReeder — Privacy Policy

PaceReeder (“PaceReeder”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is a focus‑reading mobile application that displays text one word at a time to help you read with better focus and at your own pace. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

• Account information. If you create an account with email, we collect your email address, an optional display name, and a securely hashed password (we never store your password in plain text). If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, name, and profile picture from your Google account.
• Content you upload. If you upload a PDF, we extract its text so you can read it in the app. On the Free plan, that extracted text is stored only on your device — we do not keep it on our servers. On paid plans (Plus/Pro), your uploaded reading content is also backed up to our servers so it syncs across your devices. We don't store the original PDF file itself in either case.

Information collected automatically

• Subscription status. When you purchase a subscription, Google Play tells us whether it is valid so we can unlock paid features. We do not receive or store your payment card details.
• Advertising data. On the free tier we show ads through Google AdMob, which may collect device identifiers and usage data to serve and measure ads, per Google's policies.
• Diagnostic data. If crash reporting is enabled, we use Sentry to collect crash reports and basic device/technical information to diagnose and fix problems.

Information kept on your device

• Your reading settings, reading progress, favorites, and in‑app usage activity are stored locally on your device.
• Text you paste into the Smart Reader “paste” feature is processed entirely on your device and is not sent to our servers. You can use this feature without an account.
• On the Free plan, PDFs you upload are kept on your device only and are removed if you uninstall the app.

2. How we use information

• create and operate your account and sign you in;
• deliver reading content and, on paid plans, sync your uploaded PDFs across devices;
• send transactional emails (welcome, email verification, password reset) through our email provider, Resend;
• show ads to free‑tier users (AdMob);
• process subscriptions through Google Play;
• maintain security, prevent abuse, and fix bugs.

We do not sell your personal information.

3. How information is shared

We share data only with service providers that help us operate PaceReeder:

• Google — Google Sign‑In, Google Play billing, and AdMob advertising.
• Resend — to send transactional emails to your address.
• Sentry — crash diagnostics (only if enabled).
• Our hosting — our application backend, which we operate on our own server.

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and users.

4. Data retention and deletion

• You can delete your account in the app (Profile → Delete Account). We then mark your account for removal and permanently delete your account data within 30 days.
• You may also request deletion by emailing support@pacereeder.com.
• Data stored locally on your device is removed when you uninstall the app.

5. Children's privacy

PaceReeder is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

6. Security

We use industry‑standard safeguards, including encrypted data transfer (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information.

7. Your choices

• Remove ads by subscribing to a paid tier.
• Control ad personalization in your device's Google settings.
• Use the app without an account via Smart Reader's paste feature.
• Access or delete your data as described in Section 4.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and revise the “Last updated” date above.
